Wireless Security

A key area of our wireless security research involves protecting networks from attack, corruption, and disruption. For several years we have been focusing on "insider" attacks -- intrusions launched from "trusted" nodes.

Existing, commercially-available solutions do not typically meet wireless security requirements, largely because wireless communications environments are so constrained in terms of bandwidth and energy.

Telcordia has been devising solutions that can satisfy the rigorous requirements and severe operating conditions of wireless networks.

Innovation in Action

  • We have existing efforts aimed at defending wireless networks against "routing attacks," in which network intruders seek to disrupt or re-route packet communications. The information assurance architecture that we developed, and successfully demonstrated under realistic conditions, consists of "agents" that can detect and disable an attacker before the intruder can connect to any part of the network.
  • Intrusion of wireless networks is an area of significant risk for customers and our solutions have the ability to protect such networks. For example, we have developed intrusion detection agents to protect networks from attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in various routing protocols.

Innovation on the Horizon

  • Our researchers look forward to taking intrusion detection to the next level -- going beyond single-attacker scenarios and designing solutions that guard against coordinated attacks from multiple, simultaneous sources.
