Industry Applications
Telematics
Telematics is an exciting new field of wireless communications that is bringing vehicles into the information age. Today, telematics is used primarily to connect users to roadside assistance. Soon, telematics will connect vehicles to each other, to the actual roadway, and to other networks to enable split-second collision avoidance, real-time traffic alerts, vehicle diagnostics, and streaming, multimedia entertainment.
Governments, automotive manufacturers, and automotive suppliers are reaching out to Telcordia to help develop the software platforms, networks, and applications for this new generation of wireless-enabled vehicles and transportation infrastructures.
Innovation in Action
- Telcordia has introduced an innovative core telematics platform for fleet management and passenger tracking. Telcordia® Mobile Mind connects to on-board units on vehicles and other mobile devices to deliver intelligent route planning and scheduling, sophisticated GPS tracking, and mobile booking and ride-rating services for passengers.
- Telcordia is working with the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Consortium (VII-C) to develop applications that address two of the most important telematics concerns: security and privacy. Our efforts will help to protect driver information and vehicle communications, and secure the networks with malicious-message detection.
- We are also collaborating with Cross Country Automotive Services, a leading provider of roadside assistance services, to build an advanced telematics platform that will enrich Cross Country's offerings with streaming entertainment, customized information, navigation assistance, vehicle status reports, and more.
Innovation on the Horizon
- As part of our telematics efforts, we are working with a major North American automotive supplier to design diagnostics/prognostics applications that can deliver real-time fuel and operations monitoring, on-board parameter calibration, misbehaving vehicle detection, and crash and obstruction alerting.
